Yesterday I saw this very pretty picture of a really nice idea for a playroom organiser…. And then I realised that the last two words in that sentence will NEVER work together (…in our house!)
It’s so practical, and beautiful, and neat, and… impossible! I can’t speak for everybody but out of our own experience (and everybody else I know) with our daughters playroom, it goes something like this: The first day after you bought the new organiser everything is perfect, a little bit like a fairy tale. You sort all the toys according to type, size and some even according to colour (Apple Box friends) and make a content list with index cards!
Then a week later, it’s something more like this: You see the dog chewing on something. Then you realise that it’s a piece of your content list and the index card which says “Puzzles”. So you go into the playroom and you find half the crates/drawers on the ground and the other half stacked on top of each other next to the organiser. Then when you look for the puzzle crate to put the chewed index card back you find only half the puzzle pieces in the puzzle crate. The other half is in the ball crate and the balls are all over the floor. Half of the ball crate (with half of the puzzles in it) is filled with baby doll accessories. The baby doll herself is in the little play kitchen oven and your child used the pens from the stationery crate (stationery which now ended up in the clay crate) to decorate the doll’s face. You find little pieces of dry clay in the bookshelf and the books are on the dining room table – because there’s no space for them anymore (the clay took their place). The other half of the clay turned into biscuits and are baking in the little kitchen oven (with the poor baby doll).
You turn around, walk away and try to ignore it for a week… or three. If and when you get the time (and energy) to sort it out (while your child is at grandma’s house so that she doesn’t see you when you throw away her clay cookies) your child is soooo mad at you when she gets home for organising it again – because now she doesn’t know where to find anything!
Pleasures of parenthood! Oh, and if you wondered what happened to the stationery crate… it turned into a sink for the little play kitchen’s cutlery and crockery (and as you can imagine, the water ended up on the floor…. and everywhere else!)
So first time mommy – that pretty picture of the playroom organiser is beautiful – I agree – just make sure you prepare yourself mentally for what lies ahead!
